The original type of banana to become popular for consumption in the U.S. was referred to as the “Big Mike” – a strain of banana that has now gone extinct and is unlike the modern bananas we consume today. When peeled, a Big Mike was far more moist and slippery, thus inspiring the trope of “slipping on a banana peel.” The modern banana peel is extremely dry and has forced the general public to seek out an alternative fruit that lends itself more eagerly to causing grievous bodily harm for comedic effect.
Ultimately what this means is that unless every single Mario Kart has taken place prior to the 1950s then the entire idea of dropping a banana peel in order to wreck your opponent is complete bullshit and forces our staff to conclude that a dinosaur racing a plumber down a highway constructed exclusively of rainbows does not have any attachment to reality.
